Fat Tuesday w/Gumbo Gumbas

Cant make it to NOLA for Mardi Gras? yeah us either so we decided to do the next best thing and bring the party to us. Expect some amazing NOLA inspired food and a world class band. Yes its a tuesday and we are going to be open. Want to dress to impress, we will also have the “King & Queen” costume contest with amazing prizes. Music starts at 6:30pm sharp.

Presenting:

The Gumbo Gumbas are “A delicious medley of authentic New Orleans Spaghetti Jazz with a side of Creole. They play “Zydeland Music”, a perfect synergy of Zydeco, Dixieland , Blues and Swamp Funk. This is music that will make you happy and want to jump for joy. The band gets their influences from the city that started it all in American music, New Orleans and blend the elements of jazz, zydeco, R&B, country and rock into a big old fashioned southern stew. Mike Greenblatt of the Aquarian, Goldmine, and The Jersey Sound put it best, "They’re fun, danceable and instantly memorable like a tattoo of the brain." The Gumbo Gumbas do to Zydeco what Sting did to Reggae. The band plays the music of Trombone Shorty, Louie Prima, Louis Armstrong, the Meters, Buckwheat Zydeco, and has delivered the funky swamp groove of Louisiana at community concerts and vineyards all over the tri state area. This act is cross generational, tons of fun, and great for festivals, dances or concerts. Fuggetabout it!

The Gumbo Gumbas are “A delicious medley of authentic New Orleans Jazz with a side of Creole". The Gumbo Gumbas blend the elements of jazz, zydeco, R&B, funk, and rock into a big old fashioned southern stew.

Band leader Joe Grillo first visited New Orleans in 2013 on a family vacation and fell in love with the city. He found himself going down to the Big Easy almost every year afterwards to take in the city and its festivals. The city has an undeniable groove, and once a person experiences it, it becomes embedded in one’s soul and it’s impossible to get rid of.

The band released their first album “Back to NOLA” in February of 2020. Joe spent the down time during the pandemic writing new material for the group and will be releasing the music as digital singles starting in August of 22. The full album called “Zydeland” was released on Mardi Gras 2023 and is only available at live shows. Digital singles are available on all platforms.  Also released is a video spoof on the pandemic called “Nothing To Do” that is available on YouTube.

Joe Cirotti Trio, a well-oiled string band from the shadows of Northwest Jersey’s Appalachian ridge, fuses their multi-instrumentalist upbringings with a passion for the roots of American folk, jazz, country, and bluegrass. Their bond is rooted in proximity, strengthened by a blue-collar passion for picking, and buoyed by their shared propensity for roots music and whiskey.

Formed in 2015, the current line-up of Joe Cirotti: guitar, Pete Lister: upright bass, and Timmy Coyle: mandolin and guitar, continues to craft a sound steeped in tradition yet infused with modern twists.

The group also occasionally plays as a 4/5-piece ensemble, adding banjo, fiddle, dobro, percussion, or even more mandolin, often joined by founding member Mike Alexander.

Joe Cirotti Trio has become a fixture at premier area venues across the NWNJ area, and is booking into the summer and fall across a wider area. Their debut release, “Joe Cirotti Trio”, launched on CD and Vinyl in December 2023, and streaming on all major platforms.

Charlie Don't Surf

Charlie Don’t Surf was created by Jeff and Pete, long time partners in Mobius Strip.  Wanting to create funky, earthy jam music they searched for a drummer and the right one found them.  Or more appropriately, they found each other.

Andrew, delivering a keg to their studio, admired the vintage “half stacks” and conversation led to a jam, the musical connection immediate.  Looking for the right bass player to bring it home found Christian, a jazzy, funky player, the unit complete.

Charlie Don’t Surf covers funky songs and if a choice is not funky the band funks it up. Charlie “does the song” but “does it our way.” Jamming, flipping the beat around, “pushing the one” is what the band is about.

The Toll Collectors w/Joe Cirotti

Come celebrate The Toll Collectors coming out of winter hibernation! We are emerging as a full 6 piece with the great Joe Cirotti joining us on electric guitar ... join us at one of NJ's greatest classic roadhouse venues for an evening of music and friendship $10 cover ... great food and drinks!

Christina Alessi and the Toll Collectors are a quintet led by a seasoned storyteller who sings from the heart. We counted off our first song in late 2014 in a former industrial building on the Jersey side of the Holland Tunnel. They say that friends are the family you choose, and our music is an extension of our bond.

And how do we sound? (Ah, every band’s favorite question.) Like rain on the windshield during a late-night drive. Or a jukebox sing-along in a neighborhood dive. A bit of country, rock, and soul. But something else, too. Heartbroken, yet defiant. Down, but never out. Resolute.

It might help to mention that there’s violin and mandolin, a lead vocalist who thrives on connecting with audiences large and small, and four more singers who pile on the harmonies. I guess you could call it Americana music. But why not just listen?

Christina Alessi • lead vocals, acoustic guitar

Jonathan Andrew • bass guitar, vocals

Josh Bicknell • drums, vocals

Sean-David Cunningham • violin, vocals

Maribyrd • mandolin, vocals

Charlie Don't Surf

All write songs but Charlie Don’t Surf is an “original cover band” that covers the song but makes it their own, creatively satisfying for them and their audience.

Bobby Syvarth Band w Tim Carbone

Bobby Syvarth Band w Tim Carbone

It’s the fall of 2007 and Bobby Syvarth is in a recording studio at the foot of Laurel Canyon. He’s working with producer Bruce Witkin on his next record, “Hellos And Goodbyes”,  for Bruce’s fledgling record label, Unison Music; the label he started with the help of his old bandmate and music aficionado Johnny Depp. Looking back in time through his retrospectascope, he spies a 15 year old Bobby trying to learn how to strum a guitar and sing at the same time. Even though California was always his North Star, he never imagined a kid from Jefferson, NJ could navigate his way to L.A. to be surrounded by the ghosts and spirits of Laurel Canyon. But here he was, writing and recording songs — walking the same streets as his songwriting heroes of decades past.

Fast forward 15 years and to the casual observer, success still seems elusive. But success isn’t always about those who burn brightest. One can dance around the cracks without falling through them and the act of creation, bringing a fully formed song into existence, is itself a success.

And now comes Silver Lake Boulevard, the long anticipated follow up to Hellos And Goodbyes. By the time Bobby got to town, Silver Lake Blvd. was the new Sunset Blvd. and he felt right at home chilling with the rovers, wanderers and artists who were dreaming their own dreams there. L.A.(and Silver Lake Blvd. itself) inhabit most of the songs on this new record. And as if to mirror the Wrecking Crew, the vaunted group of L.A. studio musicians that were responsible for the vast majority of the hit records pouring out of southern California in the 1960’s, Bobby used his own Wrecking Crew. Bill Goodwin (himself an actual member of the original Wrecking Crew) and Tony Marino, both veterans of the Phil Woods Quartet, are the rhythm section for two stand out tracks on the record, including California, the first single and video from the record. California, was filmed by Academy Award winning cinematographer Jessica Young and directed by Tim Carbone from the band Railroad Earth, Bobby’s longtime collaborator who also produced the record.

And so the dance around the cracks of life continues and Bobby looks good doing it. Falling through those cracks may or may not be in his future but the songs keep coming. Birds fly, fish swim — songwriters write songs and songwriting is Bobby in his natural state.
